====================================================================

MacDougalls in the 1804 list of men aged 18-45 liable to serve in the militia
For anyone looking for ancestors this is perhaps the earliest place to find ordinary people – most early references are concerned with landowners and lawbreakers, or the military, but the militia was composed of poor people for the most part, since richer men could pay for a substitute, and most did.
Note that there are four columns
name, type of work, dwelling-place (usually a farm name, since most cottages were attached to a farm, or on a farmer’s land) and, sometimes, the reason for exemption.
This could be certain types of employment e.g. minister, teacher, sailor, ferryman, apprentice, physical deformities, poor men with three or more children, those who had already been balloted or those who had been volunteers in the volunteer regiments before 1797.

SOME FAMOUS MACDOUGALLS

Mary MacDougall You probably will not know her as a MacDougall, since she is usually referred to as Mary MacDonald -- MacDonald was her married name. She is remembered as the writer of the Christmas hymn, “Child in the manger”, and its tune Bunessan, which was altered somewhat by Lachlan MacBean, a journalist from Fife who provided the English translation. ( Nowadays it has been altered by someone in England to make the song “Morning has broken”, which to my mind is no hymn and should not be used for such a lovely Gaelic tune.) Mary was born in the parish of Kilfinichen and Kilviceon around 1789 in the district of Brolas, probably as Mary MacLucas. But MacLucases often took the surname MacDougall, and in the church records Mary is sometimes known by the one name, sometimes the other. She married Neil MacDonald in 1813, had ten children, and died at Ardtun in 1872. She was also a keen member of the Baptist congregation in Bunessan. A brother Duncan who always used the surname MacDougall settled in Tiree in 1824 as a Gaelic school teacher and later became the first pastor of the Tiree Baptist church. He also wrote Gaelic hymns.

There is a monument to Mary in the district where she had lived.

The following is the original of her hymn:

‘Se leanabh an aigh an leanabh bh’aig Mairi,

Rugadh ‘s an stabull, Righ nan dul;

Thainig do’n fhasach, dh’fhulang ‘n ar in-aite,

Son aid an aireamh, bhitheas dha dluth!”

The Child of Glory

The Child of Mary,

Born in the Stable

 The King of all,

Who came to the wilderness

And in our stead suffered;

Happy they are counted

Who to Him are near.
